Splicing means adding a component onto an existing section of racking to reinforce its structural integrity. You can buy many different forms of splicing kits – each for a different brand of pallet racking.
Splices are metal brackets in a ‘U’ shape. They have several holes either side of the ‘U’ which are then bolted onto existing racking.
Before splicing your pallet racking, consult a pallet racking design engineer. They can assess the damage and determine if splicing is the best option (this might sometimes be replacing the whole section). In the case of splicing being the best option, a rack design engineer can advise you on the best way to splice your racking to ensure maximum structural integrity and stability. To find a suitable professional, you can contact the manufacturer of your racking or their agent.
Manufacturers all have specific splicing requirements based on the design and structure of the racking. There are general requirements for a splice to be structurally acceptable.
A splice design usually relies on end bearing between the upper and lower uprights. In this situation, the cut and location of the splice need to be of a suitable standard to ensure the load-bearing capability remains as designed.
Uprights tend to be the most common piece that needs replacing or splicing. These are the columns of the racking that give it height.
Safety checks of splices are very important. Just as any and all racking should be checked on a regular bases, the same goes for splices. Splices should be above the level of the first beam and must be higher than 1.5 metres. Make sure that no more than one splice is between any two adjacent beam levels.
If you’re looking to dismantle racking with splices, it’s best to contact the racking manufacturer. Different manufacturers might have different methods they recommend for erecting and dismantling their products. They may have specific advise relating to the strength of the splice and the orientation of the frame for dismantling.
